Ekphrasis is not just “a poem about a painting,” where the subject matter is the end of the story. Ekphrasis is about moving the inert words towards the materiality in the picture, to give voice to the image. έκφραση really means out + speak, carrying forth, evoking or reviving memories through a stimulus.
