Old English root: From Old English stapol, meaning a post, pillar, or foundation. Germanic origin: Rooted in Proto-Germanic *stapulaz ("stem")

It's interesting that staple connotes something vital/ foundational (like staple crop) and also something additional or supplementary, a suture or afterthought
