E.L. Doctorow:
What Doctorow had to say about history is gospel for me. I wanted to teach history, so I found out that history will not exist in a singular cultural frame. Folks fear too much reality with their history since many see history as a judgement and a firm foundation, not the process that put us where we are.
The last stanza in the Dugan poem shocked me with its simplicity and distinctive wry truth.
Dugan! “the forces of good and the forces of evil are stuck” …boy, howdy. What a poem.
