It has to be terribly, terribly difficult—otherwise you’re copping out. Is there anything else in life like that? If you want to build a bookcase, do you say, “Let's see, how can I make the hardest possible bookcase to make?” “You don't do that. You say, “How can I make a nice bookcase the easiest, fastest way.” But with art, you’re always trying to make it as hard as it can be. There’s nothing else like that, and it’s quite wonderful.
