...I think it's absolutely valid for a poet to NOT read things aloud; I think there are kinds of poetry whose actual intent is to go against the vocal. Not me. I really couldn't write shit without reading it aloud. If it's not coming from your gut, I'm like Salamun--as haughty and pretentious as it sounds, I might as well be writing ad copy. Of course, there's plenty of poets who've used their poetry as a way to countervail another, stultifying rhetorical life that real exigency has forced them to lead. But, as Salamun seem to be implying, don't think that "they're all part of the same thing..."
